MATCH REPORT | ST. HELENS 28-0 SALFORD RED DEVILS | MONDAY 17TH MAY 2021

Salford Red Devils fell to a 28-0 defeat at the hands of St. Helens in tonight’s Betfred Super League Round 6 contest at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

After a promising start, the Red Devils went into the break only six points down after an Alex Walmsley try for the hosts.

However, Kristian Woolf’s side came out with more flare in the second forty, putting a further four tries past Marshall’s men.

Salford had control of the game in the early periods, forcing errors from the Champions that allowed Marshall’s side to ramp up the pressure and were unlucky not to go over a number of times in the opening minutes.

Andy Ackers, who had just returned from an ankle injury, left the field after two minutes due to a head collision and Marshall’s first choice hooker was sidelined for the rest of the game.

Saints then took control of the arm wrestle and took the lead in the 23rd minute, Walmsley powering over the line to the right of the sticks for what was the only try of the first forty.

Half time: St. Helens 6-0 Salford Red Devils

The hosts built on their lead three minutes into the second half but this time it was Saints’ Man of the Match, Theo Fages, who went over down the left wing.

On the hour mark, Kevin Naiqama, who almost ran the length of the field a few minutes earlier, grounded the ball in the right corner to add to the scoreboard for top-of-the-table St. Helens.

Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook extended his side’s lead in the opposite corner seven minutes later and his teammate, Regan Grace, also went over down the left just before the hooter to solidify a Saints victory.

Salford Red Devils fell to a Round 2 defeat against Hull FC in the Betfred Super League this afternoon.ย

After an opening exchange that saw both sides have promising spells, the Black and Whites opened the scoring after 20 minutes, Andre Savelio sliding over down the right.

A penalty goal converted by Marc Sneyd and another try down the right from Hull, this time through Josh Reynolds, gave Hull a 14-0 lead at the interval.

Halftime: Salford Red Devils 0-14 Hull FC

Five minutes into the second forty, Reynolds doubled his try tally for the afternoon but this time grounded the ball behind the sticks to gift Sneyd a simple conversion.ย

Josh Griffin extended Hull’s lead five minutes later, getting onto the end of a kick from Adam Swift and grounding the ball.

Salford responded with a try of our own in the 58th minute through Ken Sio, who strolled over after some neat passing down the right flank that was capped with some quick hands from Kallum Watkins to set Sio up.

Jake Connor converted a penalty goal five minutes later for the Black and Whites and also scored a drop-goal shortly afterwards before Cameron Scott went over with four minutes to go for Hull’s fifth and final try of the afternoon.

Marshall – โ€œWe are confident in what we can produce this weekโ€

Salford Red Devils head coach Richard Marshall is confident his side can pick up the win against Hull FC on Saturday but is well aware of the dangers the Black and Whites pose.ย

The Red Devils face off against Brett Hodgson’s men in Round 2 of the Betfred Super League and Marshall expects a tough test on Saturday afternoon.

“I thought they were really good against Huddersfield. It looked like the individuals had really clicked already. Obviously, itโ€™s a new coach and quite a few new players there, so they will be coming off a good performance, a good result.

“Our individuals have looked at some of the areas that we want to improve on collectively as a team. We think if we can keep hold of the ball for longer and we don’t make them errors, we’ll be able to sustain some pressure and put Hull under pressure with our kicking game.”

The head coach is also relishing a selection headache, with a 30-man squad all competing for positions.

Marshall added: “Everybody’s on their toes within our squad.

“It makes my job at bit more enviable in picking a 17 each and every week.”

With all Round 2 fixtures across the Easter Weekend dedicated to Mose Masoe, the former Hull Kingston Rovers forward who suffered a life-changing spinal injury in 2020, Marshall is proud of how the entire rugby community has come together to support the Samoan.

โ€œThatโ€™s the beauty of our game and our sport. As a sport, our community focus and looking after each and every individual who has played the field, officiated, coached, we always have a really good affinity for that and thatโ€™s why this round will be so important.

โ€œI think we always come together at times when players are in need and that is the beauty of our sport. Weโ€™ll certainly be supporting that, as we do with everything else that goes on in our game.โ€

Salford’s clash with Hull FC kicks off at 12:15pm on Saturday 3 April at the Totally Wicked Stadium and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

Taylor all set for Hull but expects tough test

Salford Red Devils’ new number 13 Elijah Taylor is looking forward to the clash with Hull FC on Saturday but is expecting a tough battle with the Black and Whites in Round 2 of the Betfred Super League.

The New Zealand international, who joined from NRL’s Wests Tigers in December, made his Betfred Super League debut last Friday in the 29-6 defeat to St. Helens in Round 1.

However, despite the loss, Taylor was proud to make his debut for the Red Devils, which he capped with a Man of the Match performance.

Taylor said: โ€œIโ€™m disappointed with the result obviously. We worked extremely hard over the last 12 weeks, but it was good to play Super League.

“I have always watched it since I started my career when I was 13 years old. I used to watch it when I was a little kid and to finally play my first game was pretty cool.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s game against Hull FC, Taylor is expecting a tough test from Brett Hodgson’s men.

“I expect another physical game, I know a lot of players who are in that squad.

“They’ll be up for the game, they came off a good win against Huddersfield. So, we’ll be doing our work during the week to hopefully get it over them this week.”

With Salford reaching two major finals in the last two years, continuing to compete for silverware is the 31-year-old’s target now as a Red Devil as well as featuring for New Zealand in this year’s World Cup.

โ€œPlaying finals footy is definitely one of the goals and playing for the Kiwis at the end of the year, that is another of my goals.

I am just going to start off with this week, work as hard as I can, train as hard as I can and play my best football for Salford.โ€

Costello all set for Saints season opener

Salford Red Devils’ Matty Costello is looking forward to coming up against his old side St. Helens, in the 2021 Betfred Super League season opener in three weeks time.ย

Costello, who can play as a fullback, winger or centre, joined from Saints towards the end of 2020, linking up with head coach Richard Marshall who also arrived at the The Salford Stadium from St. Helens.

In what could be his first competitive game in a Salford shirt, the 22-year-old is excited to come up against some familiar faces.

Costello said: “It’ll be good playing against all my mates. I keep in touch with a lot of them.

“It’ll be good to come up against them, I’m sure they’ll give it me and I’ll give it them back.”

The 22-year-old spent plenty of time working with Richard Marshall during his time at Saints, who was assistant head coach at the Totally Wicked Stadium, and has transferred their good relationship over into the Salford camp.

“Rich worked a lot with us and he’s definitely improved my game in certain areas,” Costello said.

“We had a good relationship at Saints and it’s just the same. It’s just Rich is the main man now, the man to answer to, and I think he’s doing a really good job and the rest of the lads do as well.”

With a squad packed with talent for 2021, Costello’s main focus as we approach the start of the season is to be in and around that starting lineup.

Costello added: “I have the goal to play as many games as I can and be in around the squad to help where I can.

“Hopefully, we’ll be successful this year.”

Despite the excitement of lining up against his old side soon, Costello is looking forward to the return of fans in May the most.

“It’ll be good to play at Salford with the fans. Whenever I’ve played at the AJ Bell it’s been really loud and a tough place to go so lets keep it the same.”

In the meantime, you can watch Costello and your Red Devils in action against Wigan Warriors on Sunday 14th March in a preseason friendly, via Our League. Match day passes can be purchased here for an early bird price of ยฃ4.95.

BETFRED SUPER LEAGUE ROUND 2 FIXTURE ANNOUNCED

The behind-closed-doors game will be contested at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Saturday 3rd April and will be one of six matches that weekend to be shown live on Sky Sports.

The Easter weekend fixtures will be in support of Mose Masoe, with full details on how fans can get behind Masoe in showing their support closer to the start of the season.

Super League Executive Chairman, Robert Elstone said: โ€œMose Masoeโ€™s remarkable spirit and determination provides inspiration for all us.

โ€œAs he moves into the next phase of his life and continues his rehabilitation, it is fitting that Super League clubs, players and fans thank Mose for everything he has given to the game, and help support him and his family in the future.โ€

The “traditional” Easter weekend fixtures will be pushed back to a later stage of the season in the hope that fans will then be able to watch them in person.

The full fixture list for the 2021 Betfred Super League season will be released on 26th February.

Factfile | St Helens vs Salford Red Devils | Sunday 4th March

Ahead of Sundayโ€™s Betfred Super League clash with St Helens at the Totally Wicked Stadium we take a look at the facts behind this fixture.
Head-to-head
Saints are somewhat of a bogey team for Salford however the Red Devils have begun to curve that in recent seasons with two wins against St Helens in their last five meetings with the six-time Betfred Super League winners.
Both of these victories came at the The Salford Stadium with a comfortable 44-10 win in 2016 followed by a 22-14 victory in round eight of the 2017 Betfred Super League season.
However, itโ€™s on the road where the difficulties lie for Salford as they are without a win at St Helens since 1980. The closest the Red Devils have come to edging out Saints at St Helens came last season when a last-minute drop-goal from former Red Devil Matty Smith sealed a win for Justin Holbrookโ€™s side.
Overall in the Super League era, Salford have won six times against St Helens while the hosts have won 36 times against the Red Devils. There is yet to be a draw between the two sides in the Betfred Super League.
Try-scoring
Last weekend Niall Evalds crossed twice in a convincing 36-12 victory over Hull Kingston Rovers at the The Salford Stadium and in the process became the first-ever Salford player to score in each of the opening games of a Betfred Super League season.
Evalds also enjoys playing at the Totally Wicked Stadium as the versatile back scored twice in the narrow 25-24 loss at St Helens last season. In fact, Evalds has scored in his last four competitive outings including a try in the final game of the 2017 season which came against St Helens.
As for Saints โ€“ they also have a regular threat against Salford. Prop-forward Alex Walmsley has scored three tries in his last three appearances against Salford including a brace in last seasonโ€™s Super 8โ€™s clash between the sides in late September.
Played for both
There are a host of former St Helens players in Ian Watsonโ€™s 19-man squad for this weekend. Prop-forward Lama Tasi spent time at the Totally Wicked Stadium between his two stints with the Red Devils while Josh Jones and Mark Flanagan were both part of St Helensโ€™ 2014 Betfred Super League Grand Final winning team.
Gareth Oโ€™Brien also earned seven appearances with the Saints on loan from Warrington Wolves.
St Helens half-back duo Matty Smith and Theo Fages both enjoyed spells at the The Salford Stadium. Smithโ€™s original stint in 2010 was on loan from St Helens before joining the Red Devils on a permanent basis. Fages came through the ranks at Salford and went on to make over 65 appearances for Salford before signing St Helens in 2016.

Factfile – Salford Red Devils vs St Helens

Ahead of our final game of the 2017 season here are all the facts before we host St Helens tomorrow night.
Head-to-head
The Red Devils failed to win a game against St Helens between June 2010 and June 2015 โ€“ a run of 11 games however Salford have managed to overcome Saints twice in their last four meetings.
Both of the Red Devils victories since 2016 have come at the The Salford Stadium with Ian Watsonโ€™s men earning a convincing 44-10 victory last season before edging out Saints 22-14 in March, also.
In nine games between September 2011 and June 2015 Salford scored a combined total of just 76 points against St Helens but have since managed to rack up a combined total of 110 points in their last four meetings; scoring 20 or more in each.
Against their former club
There are three Red Devils who have enjoyed stints with St Helens โ€“ Mark Flanagan, Josh Jones and Gareth Oโ€™Brien.
Flanagan, who is still sidelined, featured for Saints between 2012 and 2015 and played in their 2014 Super League Grand Final triumph. Jones was also on the field for St Helensโ€™ 14-6 victory over Wigan and played almost 100 games for this weekโ€™s opponents before switching codes.
Oโ€™Brien spent a short spell on loan in 2013 from Warrington and kicked 25 goals in seven appearances for the Merseyside team.
Saints have two former Red Devils and both come in the halves. French half-back Theo Fages made the move to the Totally Wicked Stadium in 2016 from Salford while Matty Smith moved to the The Salford Stadium from Saints, following a loan spell, in 2011 and now finds himself back with St Helens after a four-year stint with Wigan Warriors.
Try-scorers
If thereโ€™s one Red Devil who enjoys playing against St Helens its full-back Niall Evalds who has notched an impressive seven tries in his last four appearances against them.
Evalds crossed for two in the 25-24 defeat at the Totally Wicked Stadium as well as scoring a hat-trick in the visit to St Helens last season. The last time Saints visited the AJ Bell Evalds was also on the scoresheet grabbing a brace.
However, Saints have their own full-back come half-back who enjoys coming up against the Red Devils in Jonny Lomax. Lomax, who has scored three in his last two outings, has also scored in each of his last three appearances against Salford.

Tickets are on sale for our final home game of the season against St Helens and can be purchased over the phone, at theย Club Ticket Office or online here.
