Ian Watson | “It’s our defence we take pride in”

Head Coach Ian Watson was delighted with his sides 0-46 victory overย Catalans Dragons and discussed a range ofย pleasing aspects of the performance.

On theย performance…

We felt we did a lot of positive stuff last week against St Helens. We did things that maybe the supporters donโ€™t notice but players see in those big game and we knew coming to Catalans weโ€™d have to be at that level of performance or above it so we kept the game plan really simple this week because we knew how good Catalans were but coming here and nilling Catalans is above what we thought weโ€™d achieve here.ย The defence won the game. The way we kicked them into pockets and then we were really resilient at the back end and that won us the game. The attack is the icing on the cake for us but itโ€™s our defence we take pride in.

On surprising people with theย victory…

Every week we go in to play and I know the players and I believe weโ€™ll beat everyone we play. Itโ€™s no surprise to me that weโ€™ve won. Weโ€™ve got a good group but theyโ€™ve just got to grow and mature together in learning how to win the bigger games and the mentality we had against St Helens we had today as well, but we were better against Catalans. It shows we can beat teams by doing things right, but weโ€™re used to people knocking us โ€“ itโ€™s nothing new.

On the forward battle…

Our pack had a meeting the day before the game and said that if we were to win this game our pack needed to step up here. Lee Mossop โ€“ despite the latter not playing โ€“ led the way in that meeting, Mark Flanagan came back in and Gil Dudson has been a leader since he arrived, those guys stood up and made it clear they wanted to set a standard for the pack, and everyone has seen what theyโ€™re capable of. I thought Daniel Murray was outstanding and Ben Nakubuwai too. Adam Lawton must have come on and had to defend six goal line sets and thatโ€™s the tough part of the game and his attitude was not to be beaten there and that was the pleasing thing.

On Jake Bibby…

He was absolutely outstanding today. Heโ€™s been waiting for his chance and weโ€™ve always had Junior Saโ€™u in there who always does a good job and is a leader for us. Bibby has had to be patient this season, but heโ€™s took his chance today and put a bit of pressure in the centre positions. Weโ€™ve been waiting for Bibby to play because we sensed in pre-season, he was ready this year to step up and heโ€™s shown a real good account of himself there.

On the halves…

I think Jackson Hastings and Rob Lui were very mature today. From the sideline you can hear them talking and Robbie was very mature in how he managed the game and he was talking to Jackson all the time, so he was helping him because we have to remember Jackson is only young and Robbie is the experienced half and heโ€™s played outside Jonathan Thurston so he knows how to pass his maturity onto Jackson.

On preparing for Castleford…

We knew we were coming into a tough run of games but weโ€™re confident as a group that we can perform, and weโ€™ll be keeping our game plan really simple, so everybody knows their role. The lads deserve a lot of credit for this performance and should take the plaudits, but weโ€™ll be back to work next week for Castleford.

On the attitude…

The pleasing stuff was when we defended a number of back-to-back sets and then went down the other end and the support play was still there. We did make an error, but our defensive line got straight back in position and that just shows your team is hungry and ready to work hard for each other.

Onย the travelling support…

Weโ€™ve spoken about the away fans all year and I think theyโ€™ve been outstanding at every game. You canโ€™t knock them they were unbelievable singing the roof off the place. I know they love a good trip to Catalans, but this will be better for the result and they hope they enjoy their night.

Community | Salford Red Devils celebrate World Book week at St Phillip’s

Earlier this week Salford Red Devils visited local primary school St Phillipโ€™s C of E to read to the children as part of the World Book Week.
Salford stars Rob Lui, Joey Lussick, Mark Flanagan, Ken Sio, Lee Mossop and Greg Burke were accompanied by Head Coach Ian Watson and read to age groups from Reception to Year 5. The Red Devils were promoting reading at a young age and the importance of having male role models to the next generation.
The lads read books on a range of topics from dinosaurs to grandparents with Greg Burke getting through three books and Rob Lui staying behind to continue reading to his class who loved the โ€˜Star Manโ€™sโ€™ entertainment.
Head Coach, Ian Watson, said: โ€œItโ€™s fantastic to have the lads out in the community and doing activities with youngsters such as reading to them as part of World Book Week.
โ€œWeโ€™ve got a great group of players at the moment who are more than willing to put themselves out into the community of Salford and promote fantastic initiatives such as this.
โ€œIt is important that children are reading from a young age and having positive male role models showing them that reading is enjoyable and beneficial can only help promote that in and around Salford.โ€

Ian Watson | “We showed real character”

Salford Red Devils got back to winning ways with a brilliant 22-24 comeback victory over Hull Kingston Rovers and Head Coach Ian Watson was pleased with the character his sideย displayed.
He covered a number of subjects in his post-match press conference.

On the nature of the victoryโ€ฆย

It was really good for us as a team and as a group going forward. To be able to show that mentality after so many errors in the first half and to turn the tide like that shows real character within the team and emphasises how good our team spirit is.

On the half-time team talkโ€ฆ

It was 8-22 at half-time and when we came in at half time, I just felt like if weโ€™d cut the errors out, weโ€™d win the game and we needed to complete sets and put the pressure on Hull Kingston Rovers. In the first half we started well and were on the front foot with some of our attacks, but we kept compounding it with errors on our own try-line and giving them the opportunities to attack us. We just spoke at half time about tidying that area up as we were carrying the ball too loose and we were causing our own downfall but once we rectified that in the second half, we looked really good.

Any standout performersโ€ฆย

George Griffin. He’s played eighty minutes in the middle and then at right back-row for us and that is a big ask to play in the middle for that amount of time. Then he moved into the back-row and made a real impact out there so weโ€™ve got to give big credit to him.

On the half-backsโ€ฆ

There are more than Jackson Hastings in our team. Jackson has pulled off a great try-saving tackle in the second half on Joel Tomkins underneath the posts at a delicate time for us. Rob Lui was great, and he plays on the back of Jackson, but the pack has got to set the platform for you to go forward. If your pack doesnโ€™t go forward your half-backs canโ€™t do anything on the back of it so there are more than just one or two players, but Rob Lui was great.

On Joey Lussick…ย

He was probably out there for a little bit too long in the first half and he started to fatigue but when he came back on, I thought he settled us down and got us back to our old processes.

On the importance of the victoryโ€ฆ

I think itโ€™s a big one this. I donโ€™t think many teams will come to Hull Kingston Rovers and win. Itโ€™s a tough place to come despite us having a few decent wins at KCOM Craven Park but they are a good team and theyโ€™ve recruited really well, and they play a great style of football. For us to get two points here and come back in the fashion we did we have to give massive credit to the players, and it was a great game but was a little nervy towards the end.

On the start to the seasonโ€ฆ

Itโ€™s been a strong start for us, and it is exactly what we wanted. Weโ€™ve got St Helens, Catalans and Castleford in the coming weeks, so this win sets us up nicely going into these games.

On the short turnaroundโ€ฆ

With us playing on Thursday night weโ€™ll have to look after the players.

Match Report | Hull Kingston Rovers 22-24 Salford Red Devils

Salford Red Devils came back from 22-8 down to earn a memorable victory over Hull Kingston Rovers which means they have now won three of their opening four games of the 2019 Betfred Super League season.
Second half tries from Derrell Olpherts, Ken Sio and a late score from Joey Lussick pulled the scores level with Sioโ€™s conversion nine minutes from time proving the difference between the sides.
Hull KR went into the break with a comfortable lead through tries from Weller Hauraki, Craig Hall, George Lawler and Jimmy Keinhorst. The Red Devils led briefly in the first half as Rob Lui and Josh Jones scored in quick succession.
It was the Rovers who opened the scoring as former Red Devil Hauraki planted the ball down from Danny McGuireโ€™s low kick.
Lui, on his birthday, would soon get Salford on the scoreboard as he dummied and slid through the Hull defence to score. This was followed up by Jones who โ€“ in typical fashion โ€“ bundled his way over a number of Rovers defenders to score his third try in as many games.
However, the lead didnโ€™t last long as Hall latched onto a chip kick from Josh Drinkwater. Lawler was next to score for the Robins as he wriggled free of three Salford defenders to score from close-range. Keinhorst would round off the first half scoring as he picked up a loose ball and raced thirty metres. Three tries in the final fifteen minutes of the half gave the hosts a 14-point lead at the interval.
Salford would come out a different side after the break and went close on a number of occasions but getting over the KR line was proving difficult. But the Red Devils pressure eventually paid dividend as Lui threw a looping pass wide to Olpherts who finished well to get the ball rolling for Ian Watsonโ€™s men.
The ball was moving much more freely for Salford and a flowing move involving Jackson Hastings, Lui, Niall Evalds and Junior Saโ€™u eventually found winger Sio who pulled off a magnificent finish in the corner against his former club. Sioโ€™s conversion came back off the bar meaning the Red Devils still trailed by four points.
With less than ten minutes remaining, Lussick would go for the line from close-range โ€“ in identical fashion to his debut try last season โ€“ and force his way under the Rovers defence to level the scores. Sio converted to complete an incredible Salford comeback.

Talking Points | Salford Red Devils 14-46 Leeds Rhinos

Salford Red Devils fell to their first defeat of the 2019 Betfred Super League season against Leeds Rhinos and we take a look at the talking points surrounding the game.

Going close

While the scoreline got away from the Red Devils in the end there were a few times Salford went close while the margin was much narrower. At 6-18, Jansin Turgut got himself over the line following a clever knockdown from Kris Welham however try was ruled out for a double-movement.
In the closing stages of the first half, Rob Lui broke from deep before finding Jackson Hastings who almost made the line. The ball would end up with Joey Lussick, but the support wasnโ€™t there to finish off the move. George Griffin would then be held up just short of the line a few plays later.

After Josh Jones narrowed the deficit early in the second half, Salford almost pulled the scores level as Junior Saโ€™u powered his way over three Leeds defenders. Unfortunately, the centre couldnโ€™t quite keep hold off the ball. Had any of these opportunities gone the other way then the game could have well panned out differently.

Jansin Turgutโ€™s sin-bin

A big moment in the game came on the 50-minute mark as second-rower Jansin Turgut was sent to the sin-bin following an altercation with Adam Cuthbertson at the play-the-ball. Turgut was sin-binned for running into the melee and escalating the situation.
Following the sin-bin, the Red Devils kept the scores close with Ken Sioโ€™s penalty goal returning the arrears to six points after Tui Loloheaโ€™s penalty goal following the incident. However, playing with twelve men may well have had an effect on the Red Devils in the latter stages but Head Coach Ian Watson made it clear this โ€˜wasnโ€™t why theyโ€™d lost the game.โ€™
Head Coach Ian Watson said: โ€œEven for the next ten minutes following the sin-bin I thought we got ourselves back into the game and we were looking really strong but after that Leeds really picked up the speed of the game and took it away from us from there. It was a big call, but it isnโ€™t why weโ€™ve lost.”

Josh Jones continues to impress

One of the standout performers on a disappointing afternoon for Salford Red Devils was back-rower Josh Jones who has made a terrific start to the 2019 Betfred Super League season.
Jones was impactful at the John Smithโ€™s Stadium in Round One and has now made try-scoring appearances at the The Salford Stadium against both London Broncos and Leeds Rhinos. Both of his tries came in similar fashion with the robust forward forcing his way over from close-range despite the best efforts of numerous defenders.
The 25-year-old has made massive metres already this season often taking on three and four defenders per carry and his offload game continues to cause a threat on a regular basis.

Gameday entertainment

Away from the field there was plenty of gameday activity and entertainment for supporters to soak up at the The Salford Stadium. Many supporters took advantage of the FREE entry to the Funderpark amusement park pre-game before packing out the Marquee.
The Salford Red Devils mobile Club Shop provided by WildThang was alongside stalls from the Salford Red Devils Foundation, Mascord Brownz and the Salford RLFC Supportersโ€™ Trust all accompanied by music by a ten-piece band.

At half-time local boxer Marc Leach and his trainer Jamie Moore took to the field to promote his upcoming English title fight in March in Oldham. Aaron Parmar also did a lap of the The Salford Stadium pitch after bucket collecting to support his incredible efforts in running 22 10km runs in memory of the 22 victims of the Manchester terror attack.
Finally, Dr Devil was joined by Manchester Storm mascot Lightning Jack!

Ian Watson | “There were large parts I was really pleased with”

Salford Red Devils got their 2019 Betfred Super League season off to the perfect start with a 14-34 victory over Huddersfield Giants at the John Smith’s Stadium.ย
We got the thoughts of Head Coach Ian Watson on the performance, standout performers and the Red Devils fans.

On the victoryโ€ฆ

โ€œWe looked a lot at ourselves in the week leading up to this game rather than looking at Huddersfield. We wanted to build on what weโ€™ve been working on in pre-season and our pre-season friendlies to make sure that we were good and there were large parts of the game which Iโ€™m really pleased with. I thought if we had executed a little better in the first half, we could have put some more points on in that first period.โ€

On the fluidity in attackโ€ฆ

โ€œHaving a spine to work with for the full pre-season has been a big plus for us. They were all very keen to get back over after The Qualifiers last year โ€“ Rob Lui, Jackson Hastings and Joey Lussick โ€“ everyone wanted to be back for the first day of pre-season. We are really happy with where we are, but we know weโ€™ve got improvement in us as a group as well.โ€

On Junior Saโ€™uโ€™s injuryโ€ฆ

โ€œHeโ€™s done his ribs. Weโ€™ll have to see where he is as we go throughout the week but at the moment it looks unlikely, he will play against London Broncos next week.โ€

On the left edgeโ€ฆ

โ€œI thought Niall Evalds was really good and then obviously Ken Sio attracts defenders. On the second to last try the defenders didnโ€™t know whether to go for Niall or Ken. The directness of Jackson and the way heโ€™s playing into the line as well stands defenders up and frees our guys up.โ€

On Lee Mossopโ€ฆ

โ€œI donโ€™t like to single individuals out, but Iโ€™d like to give a big shout to Lee Mossop who did sixty minutes in the front-row and probably could have gone a bit longer, but we felt the game was won at that point. There arenโ€™t many front-rowers who can do that in the game. Last year was a big year for Lee Mossop in getting as much game time as possible following on from his surgery.โ€

On the Salford Red Devils fansโ€ฆ

โ€œThey were outstanding โ€“ we always seem to bring them to Huddersfield. Hopefully on the back of the win this week and the tries we scored they can come back to the The Salford Stadium next week against London Broncos to kick us on. Thereโ€™s a really good feeling around the Club at the moment with the squad, supporters and community links weโ€™re building so hopefully itโ€™ll all fall into place for a strong crowd next week against London.โ€

Ian Watson | “Weโ€™ve got options to manoeuvre things about”

Salford Red Devils Head Coach Ian Watson spoke to the press following a 18-28 defeat to Wigan Warriors in a pre-season friendly. Hereโ€™s what he had to say on a range of topics post-match.ย

On the game and facing Wiganโ€ฆ

Yeah it was brilliant. It was exactly what we wanted with the lift in intensity. We knew Wigan would bring that, having the game against Swinton last week got us back into gameplay with the fitness and contact elements and then against Wigan we knew it was about coming against the intensity weโ€™ll have to face week in and week out in the Super League. It was perfect preparation for us.

On Jackson Hastings leaving the field earlyโ€ฆ

He just had a little twinge from the Swinton game, so we didnโ€™t want to overwork him. To be fair, he did more than we expected today because he was feeling good, so we worked off him. We didnโ€™t want to risk anybody we didnโ€™t need to. Obviously, Jackson is an important part of our team.

On Ed Chamberlainโ€™s injuryโ€ฆ

Ed looks like heโ€™s the one who may have sustained a syndesmosis or something like that, so we just need to get that checked out. A syndesmosis can be any length of time out depending on how bad the grade is. It could be up to twelve weeks, but weโ€™ll see where he is and hopefully itโ€™s not that bad.

On Rob Lui leaving the field earlyโ€ฆ

Robbie is fine. He just clashed with Jansin Turgut in a tackle. He had another minute to do, I think he just wanted to come off there. He knew how long he had left to do so he came off a little bit earlier than we wanted him to.

On knowing his starting side for Huddersfieldโ€ฆ.

I more or less know it. With our group weโ€™ve been able to build it over a couple of years in what we want with the characters in our team and how we want to play. Weโ€™ve been able to recruit a little bit better this year in terms of the players whoโ€™ve weโ€™ve had to choose from. Weโ€™ve brought players in who can play the way we want to, and weโ€™re really pleased with the guys weโ€™ve brought in.

On Niall Evaldsโ€™ versatility…

I thought Niall was outstanding. He was a little bit like a Darren Lockyer out there playing full-back and stand-off. Heโ€™s really developed again this year. Weโ€™re just covering bases a little bit and looking at a few things because we need to deal with it if we get an injury to a half or a nine throughout the season. I thought Niall and Rob linked up well and we even had Greg Burke at hooker with Joey Lussick in the halves at one point. Weโ€™ve got options to manoeuvre things about which is important for us at a Club that doesnโ€™t have the biggest of squads.

On Connor Davies-Aspeyโ€ฆ

Connor has been brilliant. His is a bit more of baby steps as he still has a lot of developing to do. I think the progression will be probably looking to play at Championship or maybe League One, if thereโ€™s a side whoโ€™ll take a shot on him. He just needs to develop. Thatโ€™s the difference between the U19โ€™s and Reserves now. Years ago, there were a lot of 16-year-olds who could come through and play first team because theyโ€™d played against men already. Connorโ€™s first game against men was last weekend against Swinton. I had to be very careful as there were a few occasions I could have thrown him on but with the likes of Tony Clubb Joe Greenwood, Liam Farrell and Ben Flower who are physical and big specimens to have thrown Connor in front of those would have been a big ask. He just needs to develop his path the right way.

Talking Points | Salford Red Devils 18-28 Wigan Warriors

Salford Red Devils fell to defeat in their second pre-season fixture of 2019 against Wigan Warriors at the The Salford Stadium. However, there were still some promising talking points from the game.

First look at Ken

Ken Sio made his first appearance for the Red Devils since his off-season move from NRL side Newcastle Knights and was one of a few standout performers for Ian Watsonโ€™s side.
It took Sio just four minutes to get onto the scoresheet for Salford as he met Jackson Hastingsโ€™ low kick to the corner. The winger continued to impress bringing the ball back from deep within the Red Devils half throughout the game.
Following Hastings and Luiโ€™s departures from the field, Niall Evalds moved into the halves with Sio slotting in at full-back where he looked equally as comfortable. The powerful Australian offers versatility in the back-line with the ability to play full-back, winger and centre which will only benefit Salford throughout 2019.
There is a strong competition for places across the back line with the likes of Jake Bibby, Ed Chamberlain, Derrell Olpherts, Kris Welham, Greg Johnson, Junior Saโ€™u and Evalds but Sio has certainly put his name forward to start away at Huddersfield in just under a fortnight.

Energetic Evaldsย

In last week’s talking points, following victory over Swinton Lions, we mentioned the versatility of some of Salfordโ€™s key players, one of which was Niall Evalds who moved into the halves. In the defeat to Wigan, the England Knight once again was moved into the halves when Hastings and Lui left the field.
Evalds is blessed with blistering speed and fantastic ball handling ability which made him a handful for the Wigan defence once he moved into the halves. He directly assisted Jake Bibbyโ€™s try in the second half before also being involved in the build-up play to Derrell Olphertsโ€™ late score.
While the Red Devils will be looking to Lui and Hastings to occupy the half-back slots throughout the season, Evalds is certainly showing he has the capability to take up the mantle if necessary. Ian Watson even went as far as saying Evalds reminded him of Darren Lockyer, to watch Ian Watson’s full post-match press conference, click here.

Shot clockย

The 2019 season will see the introduction of the shot clock โ€“ which has been massively successful Down Under โ€“ and it was in play for the first time at the The Salford Stadium against Wigan Warriors.
Two shot clocks have been installed at the The Salford Stadium in the South and North stands. These will countdown to encourage teams to pack scrums and take goal line drop-outs quicker.
Both sides packed down and took goal line drop-outs within the allotted time throughout the game however conversions โ€“ which arenโ€™t yet being enforced โ€“ did often go over the allotted time limit more often than not.
It will certainly be interesting to see how teams โ€“ including the Red Devils โ€“ adapt to the new rules and the positive effects it will have on the Betfred Super League.

Ian Watson | “I thought we looked quite smooth”

Salford Red Devils got 2019 off to a great start with a 54-6 victory over local rivals Swinton Lions and Head Coach Ian Watson was pleased with various aspects of his sideโ€™s performance.

On the gameโ€ฆ

I thought it was a good performance and we did what weโ€™ve worked on in the pre-season. We got out of our own half a little bit too easily as we got quite a few penalties on tackle three. Iโ€™d have like to see a little more of an arm-wrestle to see more of what we have worked on. But everything that was put in front of the boys they reacted really well to especially when we were making all the changes to mix it up a bit people got plenty of game time.

On adapting following the changesโ€ฆ

I thought we looked quite smooth even when Jackson [Hastings] and Rob [Lui] came off and we put Niall [Evalds] into the halves. Weโ€™ve done a bit of practice in training running with different combinations just in case anything happens. We know weโ€™ve got a small squad, but weโ€™ve got players who can play in different positions and that was on show for us against Swinton.ย

On Connor Davies-Aspeyโ€™s debutโ€ฆ

I was really pleased for him. Heโ€™s a baby, to be fair, and I thought he did great. He made a couple of breaks and a little bit of inexperience cost him from making a try for Jansin [Turgut] but he created a nice try for Derrell [Olpherts]. Iโ€™m sure heโ€™ll be telling everyone about nearly getting his ribs knocked out as well, but I thought it was great for a young kid to come in and do that.

On fellow triallist โ€“ Calvin Wellington…

Calvin did really well coming in at left centre. He has the ability to play on both sides and he transfers the ball really well, but he suits us with him not having a preference as to which side he plays on.

On the players who didnโ€™t featureโ€ฆ

All going well they should be included next weekend against Wigan. With the game being a little different at the moment with the stop clock we wanted our middles to get decent minutes and get used to how it feels to be under the pump and play under the stop clock. Thatโ€™s why we didnโ€™t make a change in the first half and then let the middles run for a full forty in the second half, also.

On how the players handled the stop clockโ€ฆ

Weโ€™ve got players here who are big enough and fit enough to play long minutes if you look at the first half, we had Mark Flanagan, Lee Mossop and Gil Dudson who all did a full forty and handled it really comfortably.

On the stop clockโ€ฆ

It flowed a lot better today. I thought the first ten minutes went really quickly, it used to take a long time to get to the ten-minute mark in some games but today I thought the stop clock helped today and it sped the game up. My thing with it was when youโ€™re watching a game on Sky Sports, they were finishing way beyond 10pm and the game was getting dragged out longer and longer, but I think the stop clock kind of drags that back in really rather than it being stop-start. Hopefully, itโ€™ll make the Betfred Super League more entertaining.

On goal kickingโ€ฆ

No, weโ€™ve no issues there. Ed [Chamberlain] practices religiously so weโ€™ve not got much of a problem with that. It was fairly windy when Ed was out there kicking today. The good thing is last year I donโ€™t think we had a single goal kicker for the majority but now weโ€™ve got a handful of genuine goal kickers โ€“ Ed, Jackson, Rob, Joey [Lussick] and Niall likes to put a kick in every now and again. So, weโ€™ve no worries in that department.
