Salford Red Devils forward Josh Jones has been named in a 29-man Great Britain Performance Squad that will meet for the first time next week, to begin the preparations for this autumn’s first Rugby League Lions tour since 2006.
The 26-year-old joins Red Devils head coach Ian Watson in the Great Britain setup, after Watson was named as one of the assistants to Wayne Bennet, who will be head coach for the tour of New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
Watson said: “Josh has been outstanding in his performances this year and his selection is thoroughly deserved.
“Prior to the start of the season, we spoke about consistency and Josh fulfilling his potential.
“I believe he’s been Super League’s standout back-rower in 2019 and has had a massive impact on where we sit in the table.
“I hope now that Josh can make his international debut for Great Britain.”
Salford currently sit joint-third in the Betfred Super League table and are next in action on Friday night against Leeds Rhinos.
The Great Britain Performance Squad has been selected by a seven-man panel led by Bennett, alongside Watson and his fellow assistant coach Danny Ward, team manager and former GB captain Jamie Peacock and three more former GB tourists in Paul Anderson, Paul Sculthorpe and Paul Wellens.
The squad will gather in Leeds on Tuesday week (September 10), and training sessions will then begin during the Super League play-off series in early October.
Great Britain’s first appearance on the international stage since 2007 will be a first ever Test against Tonga in Hamilton, New Zealand on Saturday October 26.
That is followed by Tests against New Zealand on each of the next two Saturdays (at Auckland’s Eden Park on November 2, and Orangetheory Stadium in Christchurch on November 9), before Great Britain conclude the tour in Port Moresby on November 16, a first Test in Papua New Guinea since 1996.
All four Tests will be shown live on the BBC, with extended highlights later in the day.

Josh Jones and Niall Evalds selected in England Knights squad
Wigan and Huddersfield each have three newcomers in the 34-man England Knights Performance Squad announced today.
Dom Manfredi, who scored two tries in Wigan’s Betfred Super League Grand Final victory over Warrington last autumn, is joined by fellow winger Liam Marshall and Blackpool-born former Barrow forward Joe Bullock – lifting the Warriors’ representation in the KPS to five, as Tom Davies and Sam Powell are also included after impressing on the Knights tour of Papua New Guinea last autumn.
Matt English, Adam O’Brien and Darnell McIntosh are the three Huddersfield newcomers, meaning the Giants also have five players in the squad as Kruise Leeming and Oliver Roberts retain their places after call-ups last year.
Salford’s experienced second-row Josh Jones, the young St Helens forward Jack Ashworth, Castleford’s Gloucestershire-born forward Alex Foster and Leeds Rhinos’ Cameron Smith are the other four newcomers.
Warrington Wolves have the most players in the squad with six, followed by Leeds, Wigan and Huddersfield with five each.
The squad is completed by three players from St Helens, three from Castleford, two from each of Salford and Hull FC, plus James Batchelor of Wakefield Trinity, Hull KR’s Chris Atkin, and Matt Whitley of the Catalans Dragons.
The KPS will join the 30-man England Performance Squad at their first get-together of the season next month, and will hold a number of other meetings and training sessions in the remainder of the year – with at least one home fixture being planned for this autumn, when the senior Great Britain squad are on tour in New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
Paul Anderson, the England Knights head coach, said: “We think this is an exciting group of players, all of whom know from their selection that they are very much in the thoughts of the England coaches.
“Involvement in the Knights set-up gives them the chance to impress, as has been shown by the England debuts made by so many players from the KPS last year, and the inclusion in this year’s England Performance Squad of Robbie Mulhern and our 2018 captain Jack Hughes.
“The trip to Papua New Guinea last year was such a memorable trip for all of us but also a massive benefit both physically and mentally as we develop elite level players for future tournaments, building towards the 2021 and 2025 World Cups.”

Talking Points | Hull Kingston Rovers 22-24 Salford Red Devils
Salford Red Devils made it three wins from four in the 2019 Betfred Super League season with a remarkable comeback victory over Hull Kingston Rovers at KCOM Craven Park and it certainly threw up some interesting talking points.
Comeback
The biggest talking point from the win over Hull Kingston Rovers was, of course, the nature of it. Salford Red Devils found themselves 22-8 down at half-time only to go on and earn a memorable 22-24 victory at KCOM Craven Park.
There were many impressive facets to Salford’s comeback but the key to their success was a resilient and improved second half defensive display. The Red Devils managed to keep to Rovers at bay throughout the whole of the second half and this is now the third time this season that Salford have kept a side scoreless for a full forty minutes.

On the other hand, the Red Devils retention of the ball improved massively in the second half as Ian Watson’s men cut out the errors and were much more sensible with ball in hand. This paid dividend as the half went on with Salford getting more attacking opportunities and eventually taking the chances that came their way.
There was a stark contrast between the Salford team from the first half to the second half and Ian Watson will be looking to ensure it’s the side that went out for the second half who turn up on Thursday evening against St Helens.
George Griffin’s performance
George Griffin moved up from the interchange bench to loose-forward for this weekend’s win over Hull Kingston Rovers and it was an inspired change from Head Coach Ian Watson as the 26-year-old put in a phenomenal 80-minute display.
The loose-forward, who moved into the back-row, was an absolute rock in defence making a massive 50 tackles against Hull Kingston Rovers, this was 18 more than any other Red Devil. Griffin also took 13 carries and was a constant thorn in the side of the Robins in both defence and attack.
Head Coach Ian Watson said: “For him to do eighty minutes like that and move to the right back-row and make an impact there like he did is a massive credit to him.
First games of the season
Along with Griffin moving into the starting line-up, Daniel Murray and Tyrone McCarthy were both named among the interchanges for the first this year and both forwards made strong openings to their 2019 Super League campaigns.
McCarthy has waited patiently for his first opportunity of 2019 to come and he certainly took it with both hands against his former club – Hull Kingston Rovers. McCarthy was solid in defence and certainly lifted the team on his entrance to the field.

Murray entered the field in the second half and immediately took it to the Hull Kingston Rovers forwards with some solid defence and strong ball carrying throughout. In fact, the 23-year-old took the carry leading up to both Derrell Olpherts’ and Ken Sio’s tries. Murray has continued to develop year-on-year with the Red Devils and that shows no signs of stopping in 2019.
Both Murray and McCarthy will be hoping their performances have put them in line for a position in the team for Thursday evening’s clash with St Helens at the The Salford Stadium.
Try-scoring exploits
Josh Jones was – once again – a standout performer for Salford and his he managed to power his way over in the first half for his third try in his last three games now crossing against London Broncos, Leeds Rhinos and Hull Kingston Rovers. This is the first time he has scored in three consecutive fixtures since 2013 during his time with St Helens.
Ken Sio pulled off a spectacular finish to help the Red Devils fight back and this was Sio’s fourth try in his first four outings for Salford. Despite not crossing last week, Sio has now found himself on the scoresheet against London Broncos, Hull Kingston Rovers and twice in Round One against Huddersfield Giants.
Derrell Olpherts’ try begun the comeback and this is Olpherts’ second try of the season after rounding off Salford’s opening win of the season against Huddersfield Giants earlier this month. With two tries this year, Olpherts has already matched his tally from the 2018 Betfred Super League season.
Finally, Joey Lussick has now scored in back-to-back games for Salford after also scooting over against Leeds Rhinos last weekend. Lussick also scored in similar fashion in last year’s Qualifiers meeting between the teams.

Talking Points | Salford Red Devils 14-46 Leeds Rhinos
Salford Red Devils fell to their first defeat of the 2019 Betfred Super League season against Leeds Rhinos and we take a look at the talking points surrounding the game.
Going close
While the scoreline got away from the Red Devils in the end there were a few times Salford went close while the margin was much narrower. At 6-18, Jansin Turgut got himself over the line following a clever knockdown from Kris Welham however try was ruled out for a double-movement.
In the closing stages of the first half, Rob Lui broke from deep before finding Jackson Hastings who almost made the line. The ball would end up with Joey Lussick, but the support wasn’t there to finish off the move. George Griffin would then be held up just short of the line a few plays later.

After Josh Jones narrowed the deficit early in the second half, Salford almost pulled the scores level as Junior Sa’u powered his way over three Leeds defenders. Unfortunately, the centre couldn’t quite keep hold off the ball. Had any of these opportunities gone the other way then the game could have well panned out differently.
Jansin Turgut’s sin-bin
A big moment in the game came on the 50-minute mark as second-rower Jansin Turgut was sent to the sin-bin following an altercation with Adam Cuthbertson at the play-the-ball. Turgut was sin-binned for running into the melee and escalating the situation.
Following the sin-bin, the Red Devils kept the scores close with Ken Sio’s penalty goal returning the arrears to six points after Tui Lolohea’s penalty goal following the incident. However, playing with twelve men may well have had an effect on the Red Devils in the latter stages but Head Coach Ian Watson made it clear this ‘wasn’t why they’d lost the game.’
Head Coach Ian Watson said: “Even for the next ten minutes following the sin-bin I thought we got ourselves back into the game and we were looking really strong but after that Leeds really picked up the speed of the game and took it away from us from there. It was a big call, but it isn’t why we’ve lost.”
Josh Jones continues to impress
One of the standout performers on a disappointing afternoon for Salford Red Devils was back-rower Josh Jones who has made a terrific start to the 2019 Betfred Super League season.
Jones was impactful at the John Smith’s Stadium in Round One and has now made try-scoring appearances at the The Salford Stadium against both London Broncos and Leeds Rhinos. Both of his tries came in similar fashion with the robust forward forcing his way over from close-range despite the best efforts of numerous defenders.
The 25-year-old has made massive metres already this season often taking on three and four defenders per carry and his offload game continues to cause a threat on a regular basis.
Gameday entertainment
Away from the field there was plenty of gameday activity and entertainment for supporters to soak up at the The Salford Stadium. Many supporters took advantage of the FREE entry to the Funderpark amusement park pre-game before packing out the Marquee.
The Salford Red Devils mobile Club Shop provided by WildThang was alongside stalls from the Salford Red Devils Foundation, Mascord Brownz and the Salford RLFC Supporters’ Trust all accompanied by music by a ten-piece band.

At half-time local boxer Marc Leach and his trainer Jamie Moore took to the field to promote his upcoming English title fight in March in Oldham. Aaron Parmar also did a lap of the The Salford Stadium pitch after bucket collecting to support his incredible efforts in running 22 10km runs in memory of the 22 victims of the Manchester terror attack.

Match Report | Salford Red Devils 14-46 Leeds Rhinos
Salford Red Devils fell to a disappointing 14-46 defeat at the hands of Leeds Rhinos bringing to an end their 100% start to the 2019 Betfred Super League season.
Joey Lussick opened the scoring at the The Salford Stadium, but Adam Cuthbertson, Jack Walker and Konrad Hurrell all scored within six minutes to give the Rhinos the advantage heading into the break.
In similar fashion, the Red Devils scored first in the second half through Josh Jones, but Leeds would run away with the game with Walker completing a hat-trick, Hurrell notching a brace and tries from Matt Parcell and Ash Handley.
It was a positive start for Salford as, after just seven minutes, Lussick managed to burrow his way over the try-line from a few metres out. Ken Sio converted.
Leeds would level the scores after off-season signing Trent Merrin found Cuthbertson with a neat offload. The Rhinos immediately followed with another try as Walker broke clear of the Salford defence. Leeds would complete a purple patch of three tries in six minutes as Hurrell latched onto a low Lolohea grubber kick. The half-back successfully converted all three tries.
The Red Devils narrowed the gap just three minutes after the interval as Jones managed to carry three defenders over the line. Sio converted. Salford almost followed up with another try as Junior Sa’u went over but couldn’t ground the ball under pressure from three Leeds defenders.
On the 50-minute mark, Jansin Turgut would be sent to the sin-bin for an altercation at the play-the-ball. Lolohea successfully kicked at goal from the resulting penalty but Sio would close the deficit back to six points with a penalty goal of his own three minutes later.
However, Leeds would run away with the game in the final twenty minutes. Hurrell stepped over for his second of the game before hooker Parcell jinked his way over from acting half-back. Lolohea’s conversion opened up a 16-point lead.
Another try would come a few minutes later as Walker collected a clever low kick from Lolohea and the full-back would round off his hat-trick just two minutes after as he finished a flowing Leeds move from inside their own half. Handley crossed with ten minutes remaining to finish the scoring.

Red Devils trio attend Folly Lane presentation night
Salford Red Devils trio Jackson Hastings, Rob Lui and Josh Jones were in attendance at Folly Lane’s U10’s presentation evening this past weekend.
The lads signed autographs, handed out trophies and spent the evening with another batch of the next generation of local talent.
Folly Lane said: “We would like to say a big thank you to Jackson, Rob and Josh for taking time out of their spare time to come down and help with our presentation day.

Player in Focus
The likes of Jackson Hastings, Rob Lui and Niall Evalds took the plaudits for a fantastic victory over Leeds however back-rower Tyrone McCarthy was a key performer who possibly slipped under the radar.

McCarthy was the Red Devils most prolific tackler against the Rhinos racking up a total of 38 defensive efforts. This was six more than any other Salford player with Lama Tasi coming second with 32. Nine of these tackles came from marker which indicate back-to-back efforts from the Ireland international. This, again, was the highest of any Red Devil.
The 30-year-old made 12 carries amounting to a total of 72 metres against Leeds leaving him with an average gain of six metres. This was bested in the forwards by only Josh Jones and Ryan Lannon. McCarthy was also important with ball in hand completing 12 passes and jumping in at acting halfback on a few occasions.
Offloads
Josh Jones has returned to the Salford side in recent weeks after a short stint on the sidelines and is well-known for his offloading ability which was once again on show versus Leeds. Jones completed three offloads against the Rhinos with one leading to a half-break.

However, it wasn’t just the back-rower racking up the offloads with halfback duo Rob Lui and Jackson Hastings also managed to get three offloads apiece away. Josh Wood made two offloads while Niall Evalds, Derrell Olpherts, Lee Mossop, Tyrone McCarthy and Mark Flanagan also notched an offload each.
Salford made 16 offloads overall compared to ten from Leeds.
Overall Stats
In his post-match press conference Ian Watson commented that “when we complete sets, we usually win games” and that was evident this weekend with the Red Devils completing 81% of their sets in comparison with Leeds’ 64% completion rate. Salford had a total of 37 sets four more than Leeds but completed nine more than the visitors.
Salford spent almost three minutes more with ball in hand which totalled to 19 more play-the-balls than the Rhinos. However, Leeds actually made 23 quick play-the-balls compared to the Red Devils 14 but – in the end – it didn’t count for much.
Leeds conceded three more penalties than Salford who only has five given against them and the Red Devils made just eight errors compared to the visitors 13.

Player in Focus
Ed Chamberlain – who impressed last weekend against Hull Kingston Rovers – made his home debut for the Red Devils and was a standout performer at the The Salford Stadium.
Chamberlain’s running game was solid making a total of 99 metres with 51 of these coming from kick returns. The fullback made ten completed passes whilst also putting in two kicks, one of which gave him a try-assist as Jake Bibby latched onto the end of it late in the first half.
The fullback didn’t have much to do defensively making seven tackles and he successfully converted Bibby’s try from the touchline.
Defensive Efforts
Daniel Murray continues to impress for the Salford Red Devils and in last night’s game he racked up an immense 50 tackles. Murray made seven more than any other Red Devil on the field and missing just one in the process.
He was closely followed by fellow youngsters Ryan Lannon and Josh Wood with the back-rower completing 43 defensive efforts while Wood successfully made 42 tackles in the game.
Lee Mossop was also putting in the work in defence making an impressive 13 marker tackles which was only equalled by Murray. Junior Sa’u was the top-tackler in the backs with 22 efforts.
Bringing the ball forward
This season Derrell Olpherts has familiarised himself with the Betfred Super League and one strength has been his yardage from his own half which was on display again against Castleford with the winger making more metres than any other Red Devil.
Olpherts racked up 131 metres and often got the Red Devils on the front foot early. It was a real tough battle down the middle with both sets of forwards competing well and Mossop was the biggest metre-eater down the centre for Salford with 94.
Josh Jones averaged the biggest gain throughout the game making around 7.9 metres per carry. He was closely followed by Wood and Olpherts.
Overall Stats
It’s never a stat you like to point out but unfortunately the game was awash with errors with both sides making 16 apiece. Castleford conceded six penalties to Salford’s three.
The Tigers narrowly edged it on set completion with 70% to Salford’s 67% with both teams having 13 incomplete sets however Castleford did have four more sets overall. There was just one offload between the sides while Salford had five more quick play-the-balls than their opponents.
Squad | Ian Watson names his 19-man squad for visit of Castleford
Salford Red Devils Head Coach Ian Watson has named his 19-man squad to take on Castleford Tigers at the The Salford Stadium on Friday evening, 8pm kick-off.
Ed Chamberlain retains his place in the squad after making his first start for the Red Devils at Hull Kingston Rovers last Sunday. Levy Nzoungou is also named in the 19-man squad again and could feature on Friday evening.
Ben Nakubuwai – who was the 18th man against Hull Kingston Rovers – could move back into the team after being listed in this week’s squad. Josh Jones and Tyrone McCarthy will continue in the squad after making a successful returns last weekend.
Greg Johnson misses out after picking up a foot injury this past weekend against Hull Kingston Rovers while Logan Tomkins has also picked up a foot injury and will be absent for Friday’s game.
Jack Littlejohn is out with a ruptured bicep but did undergo successful surgery last Saturday. Niall Evalds and Kriss Brining are also still recovering from injuries.
Craig Kopczak and Luke Burgess are both named but are unlikely to feature after carrying knocks in recent weeks.

Squad | Ian Watson names 19-man to take on KR at KCOM Craven Park
Head Coach Ian Watson has named his 19-man squad for Sunday’s Betfred Super League tie with Hull Kingston Rovers at KCOM Craven Park.
Ed Chamberlain could be set to make his first start since arriving at Salford last month. Josh Jones returns to the side following an ankle issue while Tyrone McCarthy is also named after a stint on the sideline.
Levy Nzoungou is named in the squad and could make his second Betfred Super League appearance for the Red Devils. Greg Johnson may also return to the starting seventeen.
Jack Littlejohn is absent and is set to undergo surgery on a ruptured bicep on Saturday while Kris Welham is recovering from surgery on a finger injury.
Craig Kopczak is still struggling with an injured quadricep as confirmed by Ian Watson in last week’s post-match press conference which can be seen here.
Niall Evalds and Kriss Brining both remain sidelined.
