Salford Red Devils are pleased to announce the club will be taking part in a relaunched Reserve Grade competition for the 2020 season.
The Rugby Football League and Super League Europe have confirmed that the 11 English Betfred Super League clubs have approved a proposal for all Super League clubs, and clubs with Category 1 funded Academies outside Super League (Widnes Vikings and Bradford Bulls) will compete.
Five further applications from clubs in Betfred Championship and League One have been received, with decisions to be made by the end of July.
Salford Red Devils director of rugby and operations Ian Blease said: “We’re really excited for the relaunch of our reserves setup.
“In recent seasons, this club has proven its ability to bring out the untapped potential in players to unearth superstars and this structure will give us the opportunity to do that on a larger scale.
“This means we have started to increase our search for local talent across the Greater Manchester area.
“There will now be an additional pathway in place for players to reach the highest level, preventing talent from being wasted and adding to the entertainment provided for supporters.”
Current Salford Red Devils first team squad members Niall Evalds, Ryan Lannon, Josh Johnson, Jake Bibby and Josh Wood have come through the ranks at the club and this new setup will look to create a platform for more players to follow them.
Robert Elstone, Super League’s CEO, said: “Super League is about superstars – players that get us on the edge of our seats, players that make our jaws drop, players that inspire us.
“Our success will depend on our ability to find, nurture and create the superstars of tomorrow.
“It’s why development pathways like this are so critical to the future success of the game.
“It is essential that we offer appropriate challenges to our young players on their journeys into Super League.
“A well-managed, resourced and competitive reserve grade will provide that.”
The Reserve Grade competition in 2020 will be administered by the RFL. The fixture schedule will be finalised during the winter but is expected to run on a home and away basis, with no play-offs.
The Salford Red Devils first team will next be in action against Catalans Dragon on Sunday. Tickets for the ‘Blue Light’ celebration are available HERE!
