Red Devils too strong for Warrington

The Salford Red Devils recorded a famous 24-14 win over the Warrington Wolves in tough conditions.

Ian Watson’s Salford side came into the game looking to bounce back from a controversial defeat to the Leeds Rhinos the week before, and bought Lama Tasi into the starting line up for the first time this season.

Kriss Brining also came in the squad replacing Josh Wood on the bench, whilst Ryan Lannon also came onto the bench in place of Adam Walne.

Warrington came into the game having not recorded a Super League win yet this season, although they did win against Brisbane Broncos in the World Club Challenge.

Salford started the game in positive fashion and were soon in the lead through Junior Sa’u, who finished off a superb flowing move from right to left to score in the corner.

Warrington came back strong and were soon on level terms, as Declan Patton scored on the right hand side.

As the momentum continued to swing from one side to other, Salford were the next on the score sheet, George Griffin got on the end of a Dobson chip kick to score.

The Wolves took the lead back just before half time, with Jack Hughes scoring for the visitors to make the half time score 8-10.

Salford hit back early on in the second half, with dummy half Kriss Brining forcing his way over from close range.

As the rain set in, the game continued to be a tight affair, and Warrington equalised from a Jack Johnson try, following a long pass from left to right.

The game had turned into a real arm wrestle, but it would be Salford who would take an unassailable advantage. Gareth O’Brien kicked a penalty, and then Junior Sa’u pounced on the end of a grubber kick to score his second of the game and push Salford out to an 8 point lead.

A further O’Brien penalty just before full time saw Salford record a hard earned and hugely satisfying 24-14 win.

Attentions now to turn to next weeks trip to Wakefield Trinity
