Red Devils lose out in controversial ending

The Salford Red Devils were beaten in controversial fashion by Leeds Rhinos at Headingley.

The Red Devils came into the game on the back of an impressive win over Huddersfield Giants.

The game started off on an even keel with both sides completing their sets well, but it would be Leeds who took the lead first, Ryan Hall pouncing on a kick to score.

Salford were back on level terms shortly after with Gareth O’Brien scoring his 3rd try in 2 games following a good move from left to right.

Both teams continued to complete well, and despite some promising moments for Salford, it would be the Rhinos who scored next, Rob Burrow adding a penalty.

Just 3 minutes before half time, Salford took the lead for the first time, Rob Lui made a sharp break, and put Kris Welham away in the corner.

Half time: 6-8.

Leeds starting quickly in the second half and were soon back in the lead, Jimmy Keinhorst scoring, and Burrow adding another penalty to push them out to 14-8 advantage.

As the second half developed Salford continued to put the Leeds Rhinos defence under pressure, and after a couple of close misses, Logan Tomkins forced his way over to level the scores at 14-14.

With just 5 minutes left on the clock, both sides missed opportunities to take the lead through penalties, until eventually, Leeds Rhinos scored through Liam Sutcliffe, who finished off a move that appeared to contain a forward pass.

Leeds held on their lead to see the game out, and despite a hugely encouraging performance from the Red Devils, Salford returned home with nothing to show for their efforts.
