Salford Red Devils’ coach Ian Watson was ‘gutted’ to lose to Wigan in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup semi-final but believes it’s only the beginning of a journey for the club.
Watson said: “We’ve spoken about being on a journey for a while now both as a group and as a club.
“We’ve spoken about where we want to be and this is where we want to be in the big games and being competitive in games like the Challenge Cup semi-final.
“People will ask how are you going to pick the lads up from this but we’ve got seven games to try and get back into one of those big games with the semi-final and then the possibility of Old Trafford.
“We can show people what lessons we’ve learned from the semi-final, we’ll learn from the experience and we’ll be back here but what we need to do is show people that mentality.”
The Red Devils took almost 5000 fans to the Halliwell Jones Stadium and Watson appreciated the support and hopes they continue to follow the side in the coming weeks.
“I thought the fans were great they were outstanding right from the beginning. They were singing before the game had kicked off and after it had finished.
“They were louder than the Wigan fans throughout the game which was really good to see.
“It was great to see those fans out supporting us and representing the club.
“Hopefully, they’ll continue to come through the rest of the season and support us in our push for a place at Old Trafford in October.
Despite going into the break ahead Watson feels it was a few little errors that cost the Red Devils a place at Wembley.
Watson said: “We needed a little more ball in hand at times and needed to back ourselves a little bit in that final third.
“It’s those small areas in big games that catch you and I think that’s something that we need to learn going forward.
“On the other side, you also have to look after the ball at times. We only got three of four good ball opportunities in that second half which is what semi-final football depends on.”
Salford Red Devils kick-off their super 8s campaign this weekend as they travel to Hull FC before hosting Castleford Tigers on Friday 11th August.
