Preview: Salford gear up to face Halifax

by | Jan 18, 2017

Game two of Salford’s pre-season schedule see’s the Red Devils travel to Yorkshire to take on Halifax RLFC for the Colin Dixon Trophy at the Shay Stadium.

Ian Watson’s side registered an encouraging 44-18 win against Rochdale Hornets on Sunday, in a game which saw 4 players make their Salford Red Devils debut.

With the beginning of the Betfred Super League Season edging ever closer, the game will provide more valuable game time for the Red Devils, who kick off the season at home to Wigan Warriors on February 11th.

Last time we met: The Red Devils last met Halifax in the 2015 Super 8 Qualifiers, as Salford ran out 50-28 at the Shay, with Greg Johnson and Niall Evalds both scoring hat-tricks in the process.

Salford Red Devils one to watch: New signing Kris Welham marked his Salford debut with a try against Rochdale hornets and will be looking to build on this performance if selected against Halifax. Welham scored 29 times in 30 games for the Bradford Bulls last season and early signs suggest he is poised to bring that form to the Red Devils in 2017.

Halifax RLFC one to watch: Will Sharp enjoyed a successful spell in Super League scoring 31 tries for Hull FC and Harlequins RL across a three year period, and is now a mainstay in the Halifax backline.

Team news: Josh Jones and Ben Murdoch-Masila are sidelined after picking up injuries in the game against Rochdale.

Full squad to follow.
