Salford Red Devils have travelled to Perpignan to take on Catalans Dragons in Round 24 of the Betfred Super League.
Paul Rowley’s side are still in flying form and will look to build on their huge two points against Huddersfield Giants last Saturday. The Reds put Ian Watson’s side instantly on the back foot and worked extremely hard in the baking heat to get off to a good start.
Quickfire tries from Ken Sio, Joe Burgess, and Kallum Watkins fired Salford into the lead, with the team also surviving a second-half onslaught to limit the visitors to just three tries across the 80 minutes. It was an immense defensive effort, with the team showing – once again – their potency on the break.
It was a victory that moved Salford back within one point of the top six, with four crucial fixtures in the next two weeks a massive tipping point of the season. First up is a visit to Catalans Dragons, where the Red Devils will be looking to replicate one of the performances of the season from just a month ago.
When the opposition visited the The Salford Stadium in mid-July, Ken Sio scored a hat-trick and inspired his side to a fantastic 32-6 victory. Despite all the attacking flair on display, it was the team’s defensive effort that earned huge praise – especially when they defended a staggering seven consecutive sets on their own try-line.
Steve McNamara’s side currently sit fourth in the Betfred Super League table and are only a few points away from qualification for the playoff stage. A win against Salford would go a long way towards securing that, so they will surely be on top of their game at the Stade Brutus.
Salford are almost back to full fitness and welcomed Harvey Livett and Shane Wright back into the fold in recent weeks. Sam Luckley is also set to return after his HIA failure and competition for places is maybe higher than ever.
As Rowley’s side gear up to take on Catalans, they know how important a win could be in their pursuit of a top six finish, so will be fired up to bring the two points back to England.
